Governor Ted Strickland issued a press release confirming that he signed HB 300 on February 26, 2010. HB 300 extends the Ohio mini-COBRA coverage to employees that are eligible for the federal government COBRA subsidy and was done in anticipation of an extension of the Federal COBRA subsidy. The Ohio Department of Insurance has a useful website containing information on Ohio’s mini-COBRA and the Federal COBRA laws.
The Federal Government extended the Federal COBRA subsidy to 15 months pursuant to the Temporary Extension Act of 2010 signed into law by President Obama on March 2, 2010 as noted by this press release.
Eligible employees in Ohio may now be able to take advantage of the Federal COBRA subsidy.
Employers should make sure to review the Ohio Department of Insurance website, the Federal COBRA website and consult with their employment and benefits advisers to make sure they follow the new procedural requirements for Ohio’s mini-COBRA and the Federal COBRA law.
